I’m as surprised as you are.  The video is my exploration demo for the Active Worlds 3D chat and building software.  Comit had to talk me into making this video.  I didn’t want to do it, as you can probably surmise from the production values.  But somebody named Ariane in the Second Life community embedded it on their site and the silly thing took off like a rocket.  The technology has improved somewhat than what is seen here, but overall it’s an accurate picture.  I’ll embed it here.

As of this posting, the video has 27,738 views. Approximately 21,100 views are viral.

Traffic spiked around July 9, 2009, when the video was embedded on Ariane’s page, gaining between 30 and 119 hits a day.  It spiked again somewhere in January 2010, gaining between 65 and 170 hits a day.  Most hits were from the page I just linked in both cases, which is why I put air quotes around the ‘viral’ in my title.  It’s not really viral if most of the traffic is coming from one source, but it’s amazing that one of my videos is actually that popular.

I’m guessing the January spike may be due to a trickle-down effect in that the site that embedded my video may have been blogged about or linked to on another, larger website.  I don’t think I can get stats on just what that one was.

The video has been viewed in all North American countries, many South American, Asian, and European countries, Australia, New Zealand, India, and a smattering of African and Middle Eastern countries.

The top ten countries the video was viewed in are the United States (66.7%), the United Kingdom (8.3%), Jamaica (5.6%), Estonia (2.8%), South Korea (2.8%), Italy (2.8%), Finland (2.8%), Germany (2.8%), Singapore (2.8%), and Brazil (2.8%).

58% of views so far were from female viewers, 42% from male viewers.  34% viewers were aged 13-17, 2% were 65 or older, while the rest were fairly evenly distributed among other age groups (between 8% to 21%).  I’m pretty sure this is reflective of the audience makeup of Ariane’s website.

Audience attention sits at around a paltry 25%.  This is just below the average attention span for youtube videos, if I can trust the Hot Spots section of my Insight page, which I think I can.

So holy crap!  I’m famous… by way of riding on coat tails. :)   Thanks, Ariane!
